The engine (22) is controlled pref. by a stepper motor (24) in the throttle flap bypass, in response to signals from a step generator (46) operating on the combination (42) of inputs from a main controller (38) and an adaptation unit (56).Engine speed (N) is measured (26) and compared (34) with a set-point (32) derived (30) from measurements of engine temp. (16), battery voltage (18) etc. The step count (SZ) is corrected whenever it deviates from the standard position (KENPOS).
