For the industrial separation of an emulsion, especially an oil/water emulsion, a container holds the emulsion for filtration and is concentrated by recirculation through a filter. When the emulsion has been concentrated, it is heated in the same container.Also claimed is an assembly with a single container (1) to hold the emulsion, and be concentrated by filtering, and the retained matter held in the container where it is also heated.During filtering the retained permeate at the filter is returned to the container to top up the lost vol.. During heating, at the underside of the container, compressed air is fed in to give an even distribution of fine bubbles over the cross section of the container. Vapour developed through the heat is drawn out of the container, and condensed, for the condensation to be caught in a container. The vapour is cooled by an air stream, while the working container is heated. While the working container (1) is heated, compressed air is extracted through a vapour channel (11) to the condenser (6), and then passed over the cool air stream. The dilution ratio of the cool air to the compressed air is at least 100:1.
