PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition for promoting the oxidization of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide and the reduction of metal sulfate by minutely mixing a major amount of solid particles and a spinel containing alkaline earth metals with a minor amount of dispersed particles. CONSTITUTION: This catalyst composition is obtained by minutely mixing a major amount of the solid particles (for example; alumina) capable of promoting the hydrocarbon conversion under the hydrocarbon conversion conditions, a major weight ratio of the spinel containing at least one alkaline earth metal being a first metal (for example; Mg) and a second metal (for example; Al) having a valence higher than that of the first metal, and a minor amount of dispersed particles containing at least one component of a third metal (for example; Cl) effective for promoting the oxidization of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide under sulfur dioxide oxidization conditions and other than the first and second metals and a forth metal(for example; Fe) component effective for promoting the reduction of the first metal sulfate under the first metal sulfate reduction conditions.
