PURPOSE:To reduce the width of an ink jet recording apparatus by shortening the acceleration and deceleration sections of a carrier motor by calculating an acceleration distance from the present position of a carrier and the next recording start position by a CPU and determining the acceleration curve of the carrier motor according to the calculated result. CONSTITUTION:Ink is emitted from a recording head 2 while the carrier loaded with the recording head 2 is moved by a carrier motor 9 to perform recording. An acceleration curve determining means 37 determines the acceleration curve of the carrier motor 9 according to the distance between the present position of the carrier and the next recording start position. A deceleration curve determining means 37 determines the deceleration curve of the carrier motor 9 according to a recording completion position. As a result, the width of an ink jet recording head can be reduced by shortening the acceleration and deceleration sections of the carrier motor.
