Aromatic copolyamides are described which are soluble in organic polyamide solvents and which comprise the recurring structural units of the formulae Ia, Ib, Ic and Id [-OC-R1-CO-NH-R2-NH-](Ia), [-OC-R1-CO-NH-R3-NH-](Ib), [-OC-R1-CO-NH-R4-NH-](Ic), [-OC-R1-CO-NH-R5-NH-](Id) in which R1 and R2 are mainly unsubstituted divalent aromatic radicals, the valency bonds of which are in the para-position or in a comparable coaxial or parallel position with respect to one another, R3 is a radical of the formula II <IMAGE> (II) R4 is a radical of the formula III -Ar1-O-Ar1-O-Ar1-(III), and R5 is a radical of the formula IV and/or V <IMAGE> (IV)ings defined for R2, Y is hydrogen, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group and X is a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group and the molar proportions of recurring structural units Ia, Ib, Ic and Id are fixed within selected limits. Shaped structures composed of the copolyamides according to the invention are distinguished by good mechanical properties.
