The envelope, which is made from sheet-like material, is provided with two covering parts which adjoin one another along a fold line and are stuck together, by means of side edges which project beyond the object, along adhesion lines which extend to the fold line. One of the parts is provided, on the side remote from the fold line, with an extended section which forms a border and is folded onto the other part. A sheet from which the envelope is to be folded is guided in its longitudinal direction along a guide path, while adhesive material is being applied to one side of at least one of the covering parts, and the object which is to be packaged, at the level of the fold line which is to be formed in the sheet, is displaced transversely with respect to the sheet, so as to carry with it and fold in two the sheet, whose sides which project beyond the object are passed between drive members at the location of the sticking lines.
