The spills 5 are arranged in an apparatus which comprises a container 1, 2 of heat-conducting material with high thermal inertia, means for detecting the temperature of the spills, means 8 for inducing nucleation in a zone of the spills, and heat-insulating means 3 for supporting the container inside a freezing chamber. Said container for the spills comprises a lid 2 and a base plate 1 which is provided with housings 4 suitable for a plurality of spills, for the temperature-detection means and for the means for inducing nucleation which comprise a tube 8 housed in the base plate perpendicularly to the spills 5, via which liquid nitrogen is circulated at a suitable temperature for inducing nucleation when the spills have reached a preset temperature. The apparatus and process allow a significant improvement in the survival rate of embryos. <IMAGE>
