14 A machine (1) for renewing or cleaning a ballast bed of a track (6) is provided with a machine frame (7) supported on the track by on-track undercarriages (6), on which frame there are provided between the on-track undercarriages (6) a ballast excavating device and a ballast discharge device (20) which is arranged following the said ballast excavating device with respect to the operating direction of the machine (1) and has a discharge end (23). A track lifting unit (26) which is able to ride on the track (5) on flanged rollers (32) and a vertically adjustable track tamping unit (27) which has squeezable tamping tines (42) for consolidating the discharged ballast are arranged so as to follow in the operating direction the discharge end (23) of the ballast discharge device (20) and are attached to a common support frame (31), and are designed for displacement together with the said support frame relative to the machine frame (7) in the longitudinal direction of the machine by means of a drive (39).
