The invention relates to the testing of the dielectric qualities of an insulating article of clothing. A hand or a foot is introduced into the article of clothing (P) to be tested, the gloved hand or the shod foot is dipped into a water container (6), a safe potential difference is applied between the water in the container and the skin of the person wearing the glove or the boot by means of two electrodes (4, 5) connected to an electrical tester (1) which comprises a resistance bridge and an operational amplifier and which triggers an alarm when conductivity exists between the electrodes (4 and 5), through the article of clothing. <IMAGE>
