In a process for separating and sorting plastic scrap the plastic objects (10) are placed on a conveyor (1) and individually isolated from each other. A high energy laser (3) directs impulses at each object (10') to induce vaporisation of the material. A second laser (5) is aimed at the vapour cloud (11) to excite the latter (11). The emitted radiation is recorded by a spectroscopic detector (6) to determine the type of plastic. Appropriate information is fed to an analyser and control unit (8) operating a sorting device for the different materials. Claimed appts. includes a pulsed laser (3) above the conveyor (1) directing a beam through an optical arrangement (4). The second laser (5) beam is reflected by the same optical arrangement and is coincident with the first beam. A spectral analyser (6) is focussed by a second optical system (7) onto the meeting point of the laser beams (3, 5) with the vapour cloud. The lasers (3, 5) and spectral analyser (6) are connected to an analyser and control unit (8) which controls the separating device (9) relative to conveyor speed.
