A boiler comprises heat exchanger panels (5), which extend parallel to one another and are offset relative to one another for zig-zag guidance of waste gases, these panels being laterally sealed by panels (13) formed from insulating material, and detachable wall portions (15) of the boiler housing. In order to facilitate the securement of the insulating panels, the insulating panels (13) are retained and pressed against panels (5) by said wall portions (15) so that additional pressure plates are not required. Each wall portion (15) may be provided with internal and/or external reinforcing members (x). The panels (13) may be made of mineral wool. A combustion air preheater (6) is provided downstream of the panels (5). <IMAGE>
