An interactive compact disc (CD-I) system has a control unit (1), a protocol unit (17), keyboard unit (18) and a modem (19). The control unit (1) has a CPU (6), peripheral LSI (7), ROM (8), main system memory (9) and a CD interface LSI (5) that accepts input from a disc (16). The protocol unit (17) stores a communication program and identification code in memory, controls the selection of CD-I data and provides a connection to the transmission system via the modem. Typically, the modem provides a link over a telephone line to a host computer.
