A tamping machine 1 is provided with a machine frame 2 and an auxiliary frame 11 which is displaceable relative to the machine frame 1 in the longitudinal direction of the machine 1 in order to allow continuous advancement of the machine 1 during use. The auxiliary frame 11 is provided with a tamping unit 16, track lifting and aligning unit 18 and two auxiliary lifting devices 20 which can extend from different sides of the tamping machine 1 in order to grip a rail of a switch section situated laterally adjacent to the tamping machine 1. The tamping unit 16 may also be telescopically extendible so as to project laterally outward of the tamping machine 1. <IMAGE>
