An electrodeless low pressure discharge lamp of the invention is provided with a translucent discharge-vessel (11) of a glass that contains at least 5 weight% sodium, which discharge-vessel (11) encloses a discharge-space (10) and comprises a mercury containing fill (12). The lamp is further provided with means (20) to maintain an electrical discharge in the discharge space (10) and with an auxiliary radiation source (40) that emits at least 0.5 mW of visible radiation when activated. The lamp of the invention has a relatively short ignition time.
