PURPOSE: To provide a device which can easily identify a word when the word is displayed by characters and numbers for more than two rows in a character display device for displaying the word of prescribed meaning by means of more than one character and number. CONSTITUTION: This display device 10 for a portable radio telephone is constituted of the array of 2 rows×8 rows on character display elements 12 displaying the characters 13. The character display elements 12 of first seven columns are constituted of the matrix of LCD7×5 picture elements and the character display element 16 being the last column is constituted of the single column of the picture element. The next character display elements 12 and 16 which are to be filled are shown by a vertical cursor. When the upper rows 26 of the display device 10 are filled, the vertical cursor 21 is displayed on the added character display element 16 of the single column as it is. A text compiler can execute an operation on the character display element 16 with a more logical method by slightly increasing the length of the display device.
