PURPOSE:To easily comprehend the available scales of a map data recording medium at a glance and to simply grasp map scaling by simultaneously showing plural maps on a screen display. CONSTITUTION:A display control means 11 consists of a CPU 12 and a buffer memory 17, displays map data on a display screen, stores the display data and reads the data at any time. A GPS receiver 13 is connected to the CPU 12 and the present location of the vehicle detected by the receiver is superimposed on the map displayed on a display 14. The map information is hierarchirized and stored in a map information recording medium 15 as plural layers. Roads and railroads are stored in background layers as background data and characters and symbols are stored as character symbol data in character symbol layers. The CPU 12 receives key entries from a keyboard 16, changes the scale of the map information on the display 14 and switches the map showing the present location to the map indicating the vicinity of a destination. |
