PURPOSE:To further improve purifying performance of a tandem type exhaust gas purifying catalyst at the time of starting an engine. CONSTITUTION:This tandem type exhaust gas purifying catalyst features in that the honeycomb carrier 1 placed on the upstream side of the exhaust gas stream has at least a highly concentrated deposition part 10, on which the catalytic metal of a higher concn. is deposited than the concn. of that deposited on the other parts of the carriers, and which is positioned in the space ranging from the inlet side end face of the carrier 1 to 10-20mm in the axial direction. By positioning the highly concentrated deposition part 10 in the space ranging from the inlet side end face to 10-20mm, it is possible to minimize the increase in heat capacity due to the catalyst deposited layer, to show excellent warm-up performance due to the most favorable condition of the heat transfer from the exhaust gas and to attain the maximum value of the purifying performance at the time of starting the engine.
