PURPOSE: To overcome the problems of poor separation in a distillation column caused by liquid streams along the column wall without disposing liquid re- distributors or trays between packing sections by providing an external heat feeding means on the wall of the distillation column having mass transfer elements consisting of packing. CONSTITUTION: A packed column distillation system comprises a jacket 24 surrounding a stripping section of a column 5. A steam stream is fed into the jacket 24. The heat transferred through the wall of the column 5 vaporizes a portion or all portion of liquid along the inner surface of the wall of the column 5. Thereby by vaporizing at least a portion of the liquid before it by- passes the mass transfer elements (packing) the deterioration of gas-liquid separation efficiency caused by a liquid which is formed on the column walls or flows along the column walls is overcome, Therefore a low HETP is realized without re-distribution of liquid and an excellent separation efficiency can be obtained.
