PURPOSE:To provide the automatic document feeder having an efficient arraying mode of low noise to closely juxtapose two sheets of documents on a document tray in the automatic document feeder having the arraying mode of juxtaposing the previously fed document and the document fed next on the document tray equipped in the feeder. CONSTITUTION:This automatic document feeder is provided with a feeding section 11 which is mounted on a copying machine body 20 having contact glass 21 capable of juxtaposing two sheets of the documents and consists of separating rollers 14a, 14b for separating document bundles 13 by each one sheet and pull-out rollers 15a, 15b for feeding the documents at a feed speed V1 and a transporting section 12 which consists of a transporting belt 16 and transports the fed documents at a transporting speed V2 onto the contact glass 21. A space control means for regulating the space between the end of a 1st document and the top end of a 2nd document to a prescribed space is provided. After the spacing between the first and second documents is set at a prescribed spacing, the documents are fed and transported by the feeding section 11 and the transporting section 12 having a relation of the paper feeding speed V1 >transporting speed V2, by which the first and second documents are closely juxtaposed on the contact glass 21.
