PURPOSE:To read film pictures with high resolution by changing a projection magnification corresponding to the size of a film, to enable Kohler illumination regardless of the change of the projection magnification, to simplify the work of an operator and to improve safety. CONSTITUTION:A filament 1, an aspherical condensing element 2, a projection lens 2 and a linear CCD 4 are arranged and the film F is set between the element 2 and the lens 3. The element 2 is provided with a power in a main scanning direction X and converges a luminous flux to the pupil of the lens 3. The lens 3 moves on an optical axis corresponding to the size of the film F and the projection magnification is changed corresponding to the size of the film F so that the pictures are made incident on all the picture elements of the linear CCD 4. At the time of reading the pictures, the film F is fixed at a fixed position, and one of the filament 1, the element 2 and the lens 3 moves in a subscanning direction Y.
