PURPOSE:To provide the polarized wave mode splitter of a low loss, which can be manufactured easily. CONSTITUTION:A vertical directional coupler on a semiconductor substrate 1 is formed from an optical waveguide 2 having a superlattice structure, and an optical waveguide 3 consisting of a mixed crystal. The value of refractive index to a TE mode or a TM mode of the optical waveguide 2 having the superlattice structure coincides roughly with the value of refractive index of the optical waveguide 3 consisting of the mixed crystal. One light of TE and TM of an incident light 5 is shifted to the optical waveguide 3, and the other is emitted as it is from the waveguide 2. |
