PURPOSE: To provide an optical amplifier system whose optical amplifier does not fail even when its pump laser fails, by coupling laser beams from M pump lasers into N synthesized output pumping layer beams for pumping N optical amplifiers. CONSTITUTION: M pieces of pumping lasers 11 are optically coupled by an MXN star coupler 13 through an input waveguide path 12, and the star coupler 13 is provided with M input ports and N output ports. The output optical waveguide 14 transmits the output from the star coupler 13 to N optical amplifiers 15. An isolator 18 is disposed on a transmission path between the pumping laser 11 and the star coupler 13. Thus, even when one pumping laser fails, the pumping power in operation is reduced only by 1/N, and the operation of N optical amplifiers are not stopped. Therefore, even when a part of the pump lasers are broken, the whole system is not stopped and power is supplied to the optical amplifier. |
