A method of preserving a contact lens care composition by adding to the composition an effective amount of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one is disclosed as well as a method for disinfecting a contact lens comprising contacting a hydrophilic contact lens with a composition having an effective disinfecting amount of an agent having 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one.
