<p>An orthodontic headgear assembly (10) which incorporates at least one magnetic release mechanism (38). In one embodiment, the head gear assembly (10) generally includes an inner bow (18), an outer bow (30) interconnected with the inner bow (18), a mechanism (78) for generating and applying a force to the ends of the outer bow (30) which is thus transferred to the patient's teeth, and a magnetic release mechanism (38) which is positioned between each end of the outer bow (30) and the force generating mechanism (78). When a given magnetic release mechanism (38) is subjected to a force of a predetermined magnitude, the mechanism (38) disconnects adjacent portions of the headgear assembly (10) to reduce the potential for the adverse effects on the patient due to snap back of the outer and/or inner bow when at least a portion of the force is removed from the headgear assembly (10).</p> |
