The endoscope (10) has an objective lens (11) at its distal end and an optical transmission system (20) coupling it to an optical viewing system (12) at the proximal end, with a variable image enlargement device (30), allowing the full image provided by the objective lens, or a section of this image, to be viewed.The viewing system and an end prism (23) of the image transmission system can slide relative to one another parallel to the image plane, under control of the image enlargement device. The latter is continuously adjustable, or has a number of fixed image enlargement stages.
