Appts. for the drainage of body fluids from the pleural cavity of a patient consists of a container (12) with a collecting chamber (14) and an inlet (16) for the fluid. Passages (34,38,24,46,56,72, 80,22,92,122,124) connect the chamber to a pipe (18) leadinq to a vacuum source. The valve (24) acts as a non-return valve and a controller (28) is used to adjust the amount of vacuum acting in the collecting chamber. A sensor (26) indicates any air leakage by a liquid trap (62,64,66,68) in which gases form bubbles for a visual indication. ADVANTAGE - This design does not require any filling of a sealing chamber for underwater drains so that it is more suitable for use in emergencies.
