Motorized lock actuator for cylindrical lockset

An improvement is provided for use in actuating a locking lug (20) in a cylindrical lockset (10). The improvement includes a mechanism for moving the locking device between door handle locking and unlocking positions. The moving mechanism includes a plunger (26) having an axis, a locking-assist spring (28) coupled to the plunger (26) and the locking lug (20), and a mechanism (30) for reciprocating the plunger (26) along its axis in opposite directions. To lock the cylindrical lockset (10), the reciprocating mechanism (30) moves the plunger (26) along its axis in a locking direction against the locking-assist spring (28) so that the locking-assist spring (28) is moved toward the locking lug (20) to urge the locking lug (20) to its door handle-locking position. To unlock the cylindrical lockset (10), the reciprocating mechanism (30) moves the plunger (26) along its axis in an opposite, unlocking direction away from the locking lug (20) so that the locking lug (20) is allowed to move to its door handle-unlocking position.
