PURPOSE:To efficiently decompose nitrous oxide contained in exhaust gas and to make it harmless by allowing a gaseous mixture contg. nitrous oxide to be irradiated with light and/or radiant rays under the presence of a photochemical catalyst and decomposing nitrous oxide. CONSTITUTION:Exhaust gas having 250ppm average NOx (total of NO and NO2) concn. which is discharged from a combustion furnace 1 of heavy oil is firstly subjected to denitrating treatment in an ordinary denitrator 2 to remove NOx and thereafter N2O produced herein is decomposed by a layer 4 packed with a photochemical catalyst, and exhaust gas made harmless is discharged from a stack 6 via a fan 5. N2O contained in the downstream of the denitrator 2 is decomposed into N2 and O2 with the layer 4 packed with the photochemical catalyst and made harmless. The layer 4 is separately provided in the downstream of the ordinary denitrator 2 but both the denitrator 2 and the layer 4 can be integrated into one body. |
