A stator core 48 for supporting an electrical coil 42 includes a plurality of groups 54 of circumferentially abutting flat laminations 50 which collectively form a bore 58 and perimeter 60. A plurality of wedges 52 are interposed between the groups 54, with each wedge 52 having an inner edge 52a and a thicker outer edge 52b. The wedge outer edges 52b abut adjacent ones of the groups 54 to provide a continuous path around the perimeter 60.
