PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate for agrichemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., by decomposing a hydroxyperoxide compound with an acid in the presence of a specific acid catalyst such as tetrafluoroboric acid and preferably heating the reaction system in two stages. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxyaromatic compound of formula II is produced by the acid decomposition of a hydroperoxide compound of formula I (n is 1 or 2; Ar is n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon group) using an acid catalyst selected from tetrafluoroboric acid, hexafluorosilicic acid and hexafluorophosphoric acid. Preferably, the acid decomposition reaction is carried out in a 1st reactor at 50-95 deg.C and the obtained reaction mixture is transferred to a 2nd reactor and subjected to acid decomposition reaction at 80-120 deg.C. The hydroperoxide compound is especially cumene hydroperoxide, cymene hydroperoxide or diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide. The hydroxyaromatic compound is useful as a production intermediate for synthetic resins, agrichemicals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, etc. The process is effective for suppressing the by-production of hydroxyacetone. |
