METHOD FOR WORKING OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM

PURPOSE:To provide a method for working optical fiber preform for smoothly and apropriately fusion-splicing a dummy rod such as a glass rod to the optical fiber preform. CONSTITUTION:In the method for working optical fiber preform by placing the free end 12a of the optical fiber preform 12 held at one end to face to the free end 13a of the dummy rod 13 held at one end in the same manner with an appropriate interval and fusion-splicing by butting them with each other while heating for a fixed time, the butting part is appropriately fusion- spliced by pressing a lever member 17 to the butting part of the optical fiber perform 12 with the dummy rod 13, simultaneously allowing the lever member 17 to slide back and forth in the axial directio of the butting part and repeating sliding back and forth by the lever member 17 while changing the butting force between the optical fiber preform 12 and the dummy rod 13 until the detected value of load becomes within an appropriate fusion-splicing set value by detecting the load at the time of sliding by a load detecting sensor S3.
