PURPOSE: To provide a method and a device for discriminating a cigarette, of which ignition end is not sufficiently fiiled with tobacco material, during the production process of cigarette, or after production. CONSTITUTION: This device is a checking device for discriminating a cigarette having a loose ignition end, and has a conveyer means for successively conveying plural cigarettes along a prescribed conveyer path while turning the cigarettes across that conveyer path so that the tabacco material filled ends of cigarettes can be successively moved along one side of conveyer means, infrared emitter and infrared detector fixedly arranged proximately to one side of conveyer means along the conveyer path.
