The present invention is directed to a pharmaceutical composition for inducing uterine contractions comprising a prostanoic acid derivative selected from a) 15-ketoprostaglandin E compounds, and b) 15-ketoprostaglandin F compounds with the proviso that when only one group, an unsubstituted n-pentyl group, is attached to the carbon atom at the 15-position of the prostanoic acid nucleus and the bond between the carbon atoms at positions 5 and 6 is a double bond, then the bond between the carbon atoms at positions 13 and 14 is a single bond.
