The starting point is a mould 3-4 inside which is placed the outer fabric 5 of the mattress; at the top, a felt or fibres 6; and next spacers 7 of the spring unit 8. The spring unit 8 is sprayed with flexible polyurethane foam 9, which can expand, being incorporated practically simultaneously with the expansion process, the said spring unit being partially contained in the mass of foam. An identical process is carried for forming another, opposite face of the mattress, thus forming an entire unit. Stages and components in the traditional process are eliminated; the flexible layers of polyurethane facilitate folding of the mattress for packaging and use in articulated beds. <IMAGE>
