PURPOSE:To make a proper recovery and improve the reliability even if a document image character direction can not be recognized by shifting a reference image for image direction consistency decision making into 2nd image information and making a decision when the image direction of 1st image information can not be discriminated. CONSTITUTION:For a top-to-bottom longitudinal writing document, a flag (a) is set as a direction flag in a memory FLGDIR for byte units and for a bottom to-top lateral writing document, a flag (b) is set; and further a flag (c) is set for a bottom-to-top longitudinal writing document and a flag (d) is set for a top-to-bottom lateral writing document (step S481). When the document direction is discriminated, a flag D is set as a reference direction data flag in the memory FLGDIR for byte units and reference direction data are stored (step S482) on condition that the flag D in the FLGDIR is OFF. When the image direction can not be discriminated, a flag (e) is set as the direction flag in the memory FLGDIR for byte units (step S483). |
