The fastening system is for cladding plates on a building. The building may have square or rectangular section support columns (6) with slits to accommodate the fastening elements (2).There may be one or two adjacent vertical slits into which curved spring portions (12) of the elements (2) may be pushed. There are catch faces (14,14') on each element (2) which engage with the inside of the pillar to hold it once it has snapped into place. The element has straight shanks (10,10') which pass through a hole in the cladding panel (8) and have semicircular enlarged outer ends which positively restrain the cladding panel.
