PURPOSE: To light an electrodeless fluorescent lamp at a higher efficiency than an incandescent lamp and to make the fluorescent lamp useful as the substitute for an incandescent lamp fitted into a standard fixture by providing an envelope shaped to have a height-width ratio of less than 1. CONSTITUTION: A fluorescent lamp 20 has an envelope 22 whose height-width ratio is less than 1. More specifically, the lamp has an elliptical (flattened sphere) envelope 22. The height-width ratio is preferably in the range of about 0.5-0.9. Such a short fluorescent lamp is desirable as a substitute lamp for an incandescent lamp for use in a standard base assembly without sacrificing lamp efficiency; i.e., even if the envelope 22 is thus made flat, the lamp efficiency of the electrodeless fluorescent lamp is not sacrificed (rather improved), and as a result a small high-efficiency substitute lamp taking the place of an incandescent lamp for a standard fixture can be obtained. |
