The tip of the nose (13) is moved into the interior of the rail vehicle, using a conventional linear drive (17). When the streamline nose is completely retracted the coupling unit located on the vehicle body or bogie is free and able to function.The nose has a window (14) for passage of the coupling unit (15) drawbar. The vehicle nose is sealed against oncoming air when in its advanced or retracted position (13A). The device is integrated in power consumption systems.
