The top end of the breathing tube (1) is seeded by a plug (2) with an overlapping lip. Slits in the top end of the tube are dosed by an outer float sleeve (3) when the swimmer dives and are opened when the tube returns to over the surface. The total cross sectional area of the slits is more than that of the tube.The plug and float can be removed for cleaning or to convert the snorkel for conventional use. The open position of the float valve is defined by an outer clamping ring (4).
