The invention relates to a venting device for a fuel tank of a motor vehicle, with a filling connection, into which a pump nozzle can be introduced in a sealed-off manner, with a first venting line from the fuel tank to a first (activated-charcoal) container adsorbing fuel vapours and having a change-over valve which is inserted between them and which is opened during the filling of the tank and is closed during motoring, and with a second venting line from the fuel tank to the first or to the second (activated-charcoal) container adsorbing fuel vapours, there being provided, to prevent the escape of fuel into the venting lines and to achieve an exact filling-level height in the fuel tank, a switch which responds at a specific filling-level height and which activates the change-over valve and closes the first venting line.
