The optical attenuator consists of two optical waveguides (L1 and L2) which are spliced together with their axes offset with respect to each other. A desired attenuation value (E) corresponds to an empirically determined offset (V) of the optical waveguides. Attenuators of high precision can be produced by means of a controlled thermal splicing device.
