A reference electrode comprises a substrate 1 of insulative material 7 a silver layer 2 supported on the substrate, a terminal region (2a, Fig 1) comprising one portion of the silver layer, a silver halide layer 4 arranged to overlay another portion of the silver layer, an insulation layer 3 masking the surface of the silver layer between the terminal portion and the silver halide layer, and a contact region, defined by a layer 5 and comprising a salt of the halide, which overlays the silver halide layer. An additional layer 6 comprising a mixture of silver halide and the salt of the halide may be positioned between the silver halide layer 4 and the halide salt layer 5. As described, the substrate may be alumina, the halide salt potassium chloride which may be in a polymeric matrix, and the insulative layer may be an epoxy resin or a cermet.
