Undesirable algae on the sea bed are destroyed by the application of heat to the water surrounding the algae. The heat is applied by a localised supply of steam, which raises the temperature of the water as it releases its heat as it condenses. A source (14) of steam under pressure, feeds the steam through delivery pipes (16, 22A and 22B) to the area of the sea bed, which requires heating. The steam is then concentrated and held in the required area by a nozzle (24), which may be connected to a heat chamber (26).
