PURPOSE:To obtain a dense fiber-reinforced ceramic composite material, formable into a complicated shape and remarkably improved in fracture toughness value and breaking energy and to provide method for producing the composite material. CONSTITUTION:This fiber-reinforced ceramic composite material is characterized by dispersing <=60vol.% ceramic fiber in a matrix composed of a ceramic sintered compact and having >=93% relative density. The composite material is produced by repeating a step for sintering a ceramic compact containing ceramic fiber dispersed therein according to a method for sintering under ordinary pressure, atmospheric pressurizing sintering, reactional sintering or hot pressing, forming a complex sintered compact and impregnating vent holes in the resultant complex sintered compact with a ceramic slurry and a step for resintering the obtained complex sintered compact impregnated with the ceramic slurry or forming a coating layer on the surface of the complex sintered compact, thereby closing the vent holes and then subjecting the complex sintered compact to hot isostatic pressing treatment. |
