PURPOSE:To obtain useful olefins in yields higher than those in prior art while suppressing the formation of coke by thermally decomposing pitch at good efficiency by using a specified compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Pitch is thermally decomposed by using a calcium compound, desirably hydrated or anhydrous calcium halide, (hydr) oxide or carbonate or a dicyclopentadienyl- or diphenoxy-calcium/tetrahydrofuran complex and desirably by homogeneously mixing the pitch with the calcium compound before the thermal decomposition. |
