PURPOSE:To facilitate the supplemental feed of sheets, and thereby prevent the sheet from being erroneously fed by detecting the side of the sheet when a housing stage with no sheet available is detected, and thereby moving a side fence corresponding to the size of the sheet in the recording sheet sensor device for a copying machine including multi-stage recording sheet housing sections and the like. CONSTITUTION:Sheet housing sections 270a through 270i are arranged in the vertical direction in multi-stages, only the sheet housing section 270a at the uppermost stage can feed recording sheets, and it is so constituted as to be pulled out to this side of the device. Each sheet is moved up to the housing section 270a at the uppermost stage. If any stage with no sheet available is detected by a paper end detecting means, a control section detects the size of the sheet stored for the aforesaid stage so as to allow an end fence 350 to be moved. Encoder pulses are counted, the size of the sheet is detected so as to be compared with the stored size of the sheet, and it is then checked whether or not the size of the sheet is proper.
