PURPOSE:To enable automatic comfortable travel by adjusting the control gain in follow-up travel and timing of alarm by the evaluation of congestion on a road in a travel control device to make a vehicle follow-up a preceding vehicle if present and make it run at a constant speed if absent. CONSTITUTION:Based on an inter-vehicle distance detected by an inter-vehicle distance sensor 10 and a vehicle speed detected by a vehicle speed sensor 12, a micro-computer 18 controls a throttle actuator 20 and a brake actuator 22 for a vehicle to make follow-up or constant speed traveling. Also the micro-computer evaluates the degree of congestion on a road by a ratio of the preceding vehicle detecting time to the travel time and frequency of acceleration and deceleration within a specified time. The more the road is congested, the larger an acceleration gain is set in follow-up travel and the smaller a deceleration gain is set. Then the more the road is congested, the smaller the acceleration gain at transfer from the follow-up travel to followed-up travel is set. Thus the vehicle can make automatic smooth operation without giving any feeling of trouble to the driver.
