PURPOSE:To maintain stable cutting state irrespective of kind, shape and diametral size by a method wherein claw members provided in multiple stage layers hold the butt ends at both the ends of a log so as to retract the claw members near the outer peripheral cutting region in response to the rotary cutting of the log in order to hold the position near the outer periphery of a decreasing log diameter at all times. CONSTITUTION:A first-a fourth hollow tubular spindles 111-114, each of which is movable and rotatable to the butt ends at both ends of a log, are provided relatively slidably from the outer layer to the inner layer in multiple stage layers. A plurality of claw members 191-194 are attached to chuck bases 181-184, which are respectively attached to the tips of the spindles. After the butt ends at both the ends of the log carried to a veneer lathe are held with the claw members 191-194, the spindles 111-114 are rotated so as to start the cutting of veneer. When the log diameter decreases as the cutting of the log advances and approaches the claw members 191, the spindles 111 slidingly retreat, resulting in bringing the claw members 192 of the second spindles 112 to the state near the outer peripheral cutting region. |
