The steering wheel is attached to the steering shaft at (M). It turns the lower shaft through the threaded nut (A) which is locked to the coupling (2), whose studs (T) engage the slots (4) in the sliding sleeve (3) which has internal splines (5) engaging the toothed wheel (6) at the head of the lower steering shaft (1b).The sleeve (3) is held in engagement by the spring (7) which acts on the inner face of the sleeve and the face of the toothed wheel (6). The lower shaft (1b) carries a journal (B) held in place by the threaded coupling (2) which prevents disconnection of the upper and lower shafts (1a,1b). The coupling (2) is held into the sleeve (3) by the sleeve (10) brazed into the outer sleeve at (S). The steering is disabled by pulling the knob (14) upwards, thus moving the sleeve assembly until the bolt (D), controlled by the key drops into the slot (15), and the coupling is disengaged at the faces (5,6).
