PURPOSE:To guide a vehicle on an optimum course for actual road conditions. CONSTITUTION:A course retrieval portion 14 retrieves the optimum course from a starting point to a destination using map data and the retrieved guide course data is stored in a guide course storage portion 16 and an entrance/exit specifying and comparing portion 26 specifies the entrance point of a VICS rest area on the guide course. During travel a map image describing portion 13 and a guide course describing portion 18 operate in conjunction with each other to display the map of an area around the position of the vehicle on a screen, together with the guide course using both map data from a CD-ROM 1 and guide course data from the guide course storage portion 16, so as to guide the vehicle on the specified course. If the entrance/exit specifying and comparing portion 26 detects that the vehicle has reached the entrance point while traveling on a guide course, the course retrieving portion 14 retrieves the optimum course beyond the entrance point while taking dynamic information obtained from VICS into account, and renews part of the guide course data stored in the guide course storage portion 16 and then guides the vehicle on the course using the renewed guide course data. |
